Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg conducts research primarily in the fields of biological sciences, materials sciences, the Enlightenment and pietism, schools, Oriental studies, ethnology, pedagogy, environmental studies, cardiovascular diseases, oncology, environmental medicine, social studies and agriculture. There is multidisciplinary cooperation between the subject areas of biology, biochemistry and biotechnology, pharmacy, medicine and agronomy. The considerable cooperation between the university and non-university research institutions is highly significant.
Otto von Guericke University, Magdeburg has made a name for itself for its close collaborations between the engineering, natural and life sciences, economic and social sciences and the humanities. The aim is to expand these areas in order to compete in the international arena. Computer science, economics, social science and the humanities are oriented primarily towards engineering and life sciences, and mathematics, physics and chemistry have a close bearing on the technical disciplines. Biology and psychology have a neuroscientific profile, and unite the disciplines of medicine, technology and the humanities.
The College of Art an Design, Burg Giebichenstein, Halle contributes to research and artistic development projects in the fields of the liberal and applied arts, design and interior design and the fine arts.
